The Balrog of Morgoth  -  Posted: June 18, 2012  -  Manufacturer: Games Workshop
The front and centre view of the Balrog of Morgoth! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out,
but not at all happy with how long it took to complete!

A side/rear view of the Balrgo here. The whip and all the little hot cracks all over its
body are pretty prominent in this one. I always wondered if it was painful for the Balrog to be
contantly cracking with heat and lava... The price of being a giant, powerful fiery thing perhaps?

Another view of the opposite side of the balrog. This one shows not only the cracks in the
body, but also a good view of the flame along the fringe of its back. I went with an opposite
colour scheme of that on the GW balrog; the closer to the budy, the hotter it would be I imagined.
As such, it is whiter and brighter there, and it gets darker and cooler as it rises, thus the white to
yellow to orange to red to black scheme.

Oh so many cracks on the skin... They were challenging really... First I painted the body black,
then painted all the cracks white, then red, then yellow then white in the very middle... after it was
all done, I realized that I should have when from all white to red in the middle, since it's more likely
that the middle of the cracks would have been the coolest and thus darkest... Oh well, it's still nice :)

Another side view... I like the cracks, but they were a lot of work!

An above shot of the wings and back... you can tell from this picture that my black paint
is a little bit glossy, thus the washed out brightness there. Still, it shows the chracks in the wings... I went
for the 'more is less' scheme :) I also think the interface between the fiery fringe and the back worked well here too!
The Balrog of Morgoth face close up.  -  Posted: June 18, 2012  -  Manufacturer: Games Workshop
The face was frankly one of the easiest parts! I've done many faces and lots of black...
It was the fire that was the hardest because it was new to me.

A close up of the detail on the side of the balrog.
The Balrog of Morgoth's whip  -  Posted: June 18, 2012  -  Manufacturer: Games Workshop
I could have done some better blending on the whip, but by the time I got to it
I just wanted the figure to be completed! Still, I'm pretty happy with it. It's a tough
piece to paint, and sculpt for that matter... those flames look so static and unrealistic...
But probably as realistic and it could get...
The Balrog of Morgoth battles some puny dwarves! Durin's bane indeed.  -  Posted: June 18, 2012  -  Manufacturer: Games Workshop
The mighty Balrog ignores a few puny dwarves... Seriously, I should have converted it
to be looking down since it would never have anyone to look straight across at!
The Balrog of Morgoth as a work-in-progress  -  Posted: May 12, 2012  -  Manufacturer: Games Workshop
Given the price of these figures I simply cannot believe how poorly they go together. They barely
fit at all, plugs and holes don't line up, not to mention cavernous gaps at all of the joins. Here we see all
the putty required around the wings and tail.

Seriously folks, there are gaming companies who do a lot better job than this! That gap up the belly
was quite wide. I think the only part of the Balrog's body that actually toched without a gap was on the
back: that's the only part that gets covered up by the fringe of fire...

Here you can see all the putty required to fill the gap between the body and the fringe of fire,
as well as the arms. I didn't even bother trying to fill that huge gap in the mouth... What's the deal?
Seriously? Other than that though, it's a killer model.

From this angle I really like the plastic cave troll. This one comes from the Mines of Moria
boxed set and comes in a few pieces. I have to fill the gaps with putty, but in the end it worked out
pretty well. Of course, it took me about three years to finish this one from beginning to end, so it
might have seemed like less work than it actually was :) Overall, I'm happy with it.

Side view of the troll. The pose is a little wooden from this angle. A little plastic almost.
But I'm not too concerned with it. It's still a pretty good deal for a pretty large and nice figure.

The back view. It's a tough fig to paint really, since it's all gray... But the brown
loin cloth is a nice tough. I really like brown and gray as a colour combination, it works
really well for some reason...

The chain bothers me here... Swinging chains/flails/whips would typically be straight,
unless they are simply falling... But sculptors don't think it looks good... But at least this
chain is kinda natural looking, and not in that curved shape so often used!
Plastic and Metal Cave Trolls  -  Posted: December 19, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Games Workshop
From this picture, it's obvious that the metal troll is more detailed and has a better
pose I think. But the painting execution on the first one is pretty sloppy :) So, overall,
I think it evens out ;)

The dwarves bravely stand against the troll... It's certainly not a fair fight!
Goblin King conversion  -  Posted: December 22, 2007  -  Manufacturer: Games Workshop
I finally got around to re-painting my goblin king conversion!
Now that it is all shiney and not so dusty, I am very happy with it!
Goblin King conversion  -  Posted: Some time in 2003  -  Manufacturer: Games Workshop
These were done back in 2003. They actually looked
pretty good until a crazy can of GW purity seal got
in the way... Oh well, the goblins are still one of
my favorite armies... I really like their unique
feel. This specific one is my version of the goblin
king, as I wasn't too keen on GW's rendition...

Goblin Drummers  -  Posted: Some time in 2003  -  Manufacturer: Games Workshop
The goblin drummers are pretty cool for sure.
